Houston GMWA to host a ‘Gospel Symposium’ Aug. 26th-27th


The Houston Chapter of the Gospel Music Workshop of America is hosting a Gospel Symposium Aug. 26th-27th at Concord Elementary School 5426 Cavalcade Street Houston, Texas 77026.  The two-day session is designed to educate gospel singers, musicians, directors & music ministers. The symposium will also teach them new music from the GMWA National Convention.

It features workshops about praise & worship, rehearsal techniques, singing in the choir, piano techniques, directing a choir and also choir decorum. Registration information is available on houstongmwa.org.

Houston represents at GMWA


The Gospel Music Workshop of America, celebrating the 80th birthday of Founder James Cleveland, is taking place this week in Tampa, FL. Local Houston Chapter leaders have been keeping us updated throughout the week of the event’s success on Facebook.com.

Theola Booker Houston is in Tampa. Really active in National GMWA. Francis Harris is running for queen. Ronald Materre in new music, Juanita Suggs in Women’s, Dr. Lemons and Joann Woods in Academic division, Robert Thomas in registration , Dr. Barks-Dale in Men’s. Go Houston!
Ronald J. Materre Congratulations to Texas Mass Choir and Houston Chapter for doing such a superb job in ministering at the GMWA 44th Convention in Tampa! I am proud to serve as Music Director for both groups but certainly grateful for the team of directors, musicians, writers, etc, that assist to make us who we are. Thank you to all of the members of both groups for your sacrifice, willingness, and support. To God be the glory! Continue in the work of the Lord!

The GMWA’s National Convention lasts from Aug. 13th-19th and is the largest gospel music convention in the world.

Houston Mass preparing for their ‘Annual Summer Concert’ Aug. 8th

The Houston Chapter of the Gospel Music Workshop of America is preparing for their annual summer concert on August 8th. This year’s event will feature some of Texas’ greatest singers but this year the guests have something in common, they are all pastors!

The concert features:

Rev. Edwin A. Davis, Galilee Baptist Church
Rev. Robert Dixon,  Northshore Community Fellowship of Faith Church
Rev. Terrance Grant-Malone, St. John Baptist Church
Rev. Shannon Oliver, Calvary Baptist Church
Rev. Keion Henderson, The Lighthouse Church
Rev. Cecil Phillips, New Bethel Baptist Church
Rev. Theophilus Berry, Greater True Light Baptist Church
Dr. Antoine Eakins, Trinity Baptist Church

It will be held at St. Luke Miss. Baptist Church 4200 Lockwood Houston, Texas 77026. There is no admission charge for this event. Doors open at 6:00pm, the concert begins at 7:00pm.

Houston GMWA sings classics at Texas Mass’ Anniversary


MyHoustonGOSPEL visited Texas Mass Choir’s 27th Anniversary Celebration, hosted by Houston GMWA Mass Choir, Nov. 12, 2010 at St John Baptist Church in Houston, TX.  Ronald Materre directed this classic medley of hits “Lord Keep Me Day by Day,” “Lord Do It” and “He Decided to Die” will surely make you move out of your seat.
